Slade had to work and Didi and Heike left to go to Umflozi park for a couple of days, so Jen and I went the gym with Krissy this morning. In the afternoon Witt changed the oil and replaced the fuel filter, and we spent the balance of the day hauling everything out of the car and cleaning it.

This morning was very frustrating, as we drove all the way into Durban to try to find the American Express office to pick up replacement car registration that my folks mailed here. We never found the office, and headed back to Slade’s house without having accomplished anything. Didi and Heike have returned from the park, and we packed up for a trip to the Drakensburg mountains. We picked slade up from work at about 4pm and drove for about two hours to reach the northern section of the mountain range. We grilled some steak for dinner and sat around talking.

Slade guided us on a beautiful hiking tour of the drakensburg today. The scenery was absolutely stunning and Jen and I regret that we don’t have enough time left to do a multi-day hike here. It rained on us a little and we retreated into an overhang to have lunch. We had to negotiate some ladders and a chain on the way down, and had a great time. Slade put on a potjie for dinner, but before long the clouds moved in and we were treated to a massive hail/lightning storm as we all tried to huddle under Rafiki’s awning. The fire that was cooking the potjie was extinguished, and after the rain had subsided a little we grabbed the coleman stove and retreated to the camp laundry room where we finished cooking and ate. Krissy and Slade’s tent got wet on the inside, and we fear they are in for a cold, damp evening.

We headed back toward Durban this morning, stopping at a farm to sample some cheese and spending a few hours over lunch at a German restaurant in the country. We watched Shrek II on the laptop back at Slade’s place and enjoyed a light dinner of cheese and wine.

This morning we headed back to Durban and took Rafiki to a Land Rover repair shop to have them look at (or listen to) the transmission. They said that I’d be crazy to pull it apart to fix it, and that the noise didn’t sound too bad. At the risk of having to spend more to fix it in the US, we decided to save the time and the money and carry on. We picked up our new registration and met Krissy and the “Germies” at the mall where we had some lunch and checked our email..

We woke up early to say goodbye to Slade before he left for work, then spent a couple of hours on the phone arranging to ship Rafiki. We found a guy who will ship from Cape Town, which although it means we won’t get to see Krissy and Slade again, we won’t have to make the three day drive from Cape Town back to Durban. We said goodbye to Krissy, Didi, Heike, and Ross (Slade’s dad) and hit the road toward Coffee Bay, a stop recommended by Rupert. We had a nice picnic on the beach on the way and arrived at coffee bay at around 630. There were lots of people hanging about offering to watch the car, sell us weed, or whatever, and we got a bad feeling about the place. We had dinner at the backpackers’ restaurant.

We left Coffee Bay after breakfast and headed for Bucaneer Backpackers, our next stop along the “Wild Coast” of South Africa. We arrived there at about 130pm and after finding a camping spot we went for a long walk on the beach. In the evening we enjoyed a traditional Khosian meal.

We booked surfing lessons today, so after breakfast we grabbed our boards, some wax, and wetsuits and headed for the beach. First we paddled around in the lagoon to try to get a feel for the balance of the board. Next we headed for the beach where we practiced catching waves without standing up. After a bit of theory using diagrams drawn in the sand, we practiced a couple of methods of hopping up on the beach. Back in the water, our instructor pointed out a pod of dolphins nearby, so we paddled over to them and watched them playing in the waves for awhile. After several attempts Witt managed to gain his feet on the board somewhat unsteadily. The lack of sun and cold water drove us out of the water sooner than we would have liked, and we spent the afternoon in the bar working on website updates.

Waaaaaaa!

We have more updates coming...stay tuned!
